Radio Reading Services

This quotation from Audio Vision Radio Reading Service for the Blind in California explains well this type of service.

"Now, through Audio Vision Radio Reading Service for the Blind, many people once caught in this information void have 24-hour, seven-days-a-week access to the local and national news and information that shapes our lives. Everything from the front-page stories to the grocery store advertisements is read by volunteers and is broadcast over what is called a "sub-frequency" of a public FM radio station. The broadcast can be heard only through the use of a special radio receiver. For the blind and print handicapped, this service is as big a part of their lives as breakfast, lunch and dinner. Anyone who cannot read due to blindness, impaired vision or physical handicap can request the Audio Vision service by simply calling or writing Audio Vision for an application form. Special access receivers are required for anyone to pick up our broadcast. They are available through Audio Vision, free of charge; how ever, we do ask for a $90.00 contribution from anyone who is financially able to assist us. This contribution enables us to purchase more special access receivers."

In some cases, the programming may be received through the SAP channel on newer television sets and videocassette players.

The radio signals used by most radio reading services cover a fairly small area. Look for a station local to you, whether in your state or in a neighboring state.
